    Description

Illustrious Cameo Glass vase by Kelsey Murphy (Pilgrim Glass) carved Vineyard Elegant
This listing is for a beautiful and rare Illustrious Cameo Glass vase by Kelsey Murphy carved in a grape and vine design. It is singed Kelsey / RPGB (Bob Bomkamp) 2002 D/P.
It is crystal flashed with violet (purple) it is 12-1/2” tall and 4-3/4” wide carved with grapes and vines. It is a development proof from 2002 that was produced at GlassWorks. This was part of a small amount of glass produced by the cold case method just prior to Pilgrim’s closing to see if it might be a good fit for Kelsey and Bob to continue with their art.
GlassWorks was founded in 1926 as The Louie glass Company was organized by Louie Wohnic an Austrian glass blower in Weston, West Virginia. This company was a primary maker of blown crystal and colored pitchers, tumblers vases and tumble ups.
Louie Wohic operated the company until his death in 1950. After that his daughter ran the operation until the company was sold in 1972. The company continued to be operated as Louie Glass until it became a part of Princess House in 1996.
I made one trip to GlassWorks for a tour of the plant and to purchase examples of Kelsey’s work from there.
It ended before it got started examples of work from GlassWorks are rare.
Cameo Glass is the art of carving through different layers of colored glass. This is just one of many beautiful designs that glass artist Kelsey Murphy got her inspiration from nature.
Pilgrim under Kelsey’s direction had perfected hot casing multiple layers of hot glass and carving through them to the layers below. There are several companies that have done cold casing of layers but none have accomplished what Pilgrim Glass did with hot cased glass. This feat along with the artistry is what will continue to keep this glass sought after in the future as more collectors realize just how special it is. Pilgrim Glass Ceredo, West Virginia closed in 2002 but there final chapter is far from over as more people discover the legacy they left behind.
