Resting along side a real cocoon, we have a beautiful taxidermy Polyphemus caterpillar on display in one of our beautiful ball top domes. The cocoon is attached to a preserved small branch which is mounted to a wooden base. Around the bottom of the branch is a minimal amount of moss and on top of the base, a removable glass dome rests to keep your specimen safe from dust and wear. The entire display measures approximately 6" x 4" and would be wonderful for the bug lover in your life, or would be an eye catching addition to any collection

Species and fun facts: Antheraea polyphemus, the Polyphemus moth, is a North American member of the family Saturniidae, the giant silk moths. It is a tan-colored moth, with an average wingspan of 15 cm (6 in). The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eyespots on its two hindwings. The eyespots give it its name – from the Greek myth of the cyclops Polyphemus. The species was first described by Pieter Cramer in 1776. The species is widespread in continental North America, with local populations found throughout subarctic Canada and the United States. The caterpillar can eat 86,000 times its weight at emergence in a little less than two months.

When purchasing this item you must agree to the following: No claims for small broken parts such as antennae or a detached cocoon or caterpillar or piece of branch.  These small parts are easily fixable and you should be aware that you may have to fix (glue) a part when purchasing items like these as they sometimes get juggled lose in shipping.  If there is a major problem I will take care of the matter.  See my feedback for confirmation.  I rarely have a problem but even with good packaging it is impossible for us to Guarantee that specimens will arrive totally intact although I have had no problems with any of the Butterflies to date. Returns are accepted, please contact us ASAP if you would like to return the item.
